１匹、とても泳ぐのが速い魚がやってきて、 マリのペンダントにくいつきました。 マリが思わず魚をふりはらうと、 その魚はペンダントをくわえたまま、 あとからやってきた魚の中にかくれてしまいました。 その時、マリはカイを見つけたのです。 けれども、カイは途中で引き返し、 海底の方へと戻っていってしまいました。 A fish swam fast to her and snapped her pendant. She shook it off, and then it was hidden by other fish, with her pendant. At that instant, Mary saw Kai turning back and swimming to the bottom of the sea. |

マリが浜辺へ着く頃には、魚たちもあきらめたのか、 もう追ってはきませんでした。 マリはとっても悲しくなりました。 「カイ、約束を破ってごめんね。」 それから毎日毎日、マリは大きな岩の上に座って海を見ながら泣きました。 けれどもカイは姿を見せませんでした。 「もう、カイは私のこと、キライになっちゃったよね・・・。」 The fish seemed to have given up chasing after Mary when she arrived at the beach. She became so sad. "Kai, I'm sorry for breaking our promise."She thought. Watching the sea, sitting on a big rock, she cried everyday. But Kai didn't appear. "Kai, you must have hated me..." |

夕方になりました。 夕日が海の向こうへ沈んでいきます。 マリが岩の上に立ち上がって家に帰ろうとした時でした。 １匹のイルカが、こちらへ向かって泳いでくるのが見えます。 マリは思わず、声をあげました。 「カイ！」 Evening came. The evening sun was sinking behind the sea. When Mary stood up on the rock and began to go back home, she saw a dolphin swimming to the place where she was. She shouted in spite of herself. "Kai !" |

マリは海へ飛び込むと、カイの方へ泳いでいきました。 カイもマリを見つけてうれしそうです。 「カイ、ごめんね、約束やぶって。」 マリは謝りました。 マリが見ると、カイは口に あのペンダントをくわえていました。 「カイ、これ、私のために拾ってきてくれたの？」 「うん。マリ、僕たち、友達じゃないか。」 「でも私、約束破っちゃったんだよ？」 Mary dived into the sea, and swam to Kai. He seemed to be delighted to see her. "I'm sorry for breaking the promise, Kai." She apologized to him. Mary found Kai had her pendant in his mouth. "Did you pick it for me from the bottom of the sea, Kai?" "Yes, Mary. We're friends, aren't we?" "...but, I broke the promise." |
